Old Dogs And New Tricks

Hello, I just received my first e-cig a few days ago. I bought one for my father in law too. He is a very heavy smoker. I was hoping this would be a good method for him to continue the activity without all the harmful issues associated with smoking.

I have a Titan 510 from TW. I really like it. It seems to be true that once you get a taste of these things, they are hard to put down. It has completely eliminated my desire for a smoke. However, it isn't initially as easy as firing one up. And I am a bit concerned that my father in law will get frustrated and not want to keep screwing with it. I also get the impression he is not very open to having someone hover over him to try to improve the process - not that I'm much help at this point anyway. I basically gave him the 510, gave him a brief idea of how to use it and refill the cartridges, and just let him play with it.

My concern is that he will not want to refill these things as often as it appears one has to in order to keep the vapor going.

I stumbled into a 808 (Vapor King) discussion which was comparing the 510 and 808. They seem to claim that you can pretty much vape all day with their 'cartomizer.' I was fussed at for asking a question there (on another forum), so I will try to ask it here: Does anyone know if this is true about the Vapor King? Is this something I should look into for a low maintenance alternative?

Welcome NavyLight (again). :) I ordered an 808 for my wife from vapor4life. We haven't tried it out yet, but there are a few members here that will give you some feedback soon I'm sure. The link below is a post I started when I was looking for a hassel free answer to get my wife converted over. This may help answer some of your questions.

Sorry about your experience on another forum... I assure you that will never happen here. This is a great place to get info and ask questions and have a good time. Everyone is very knowledgable, helpful and supportive. Oh, yea - glad you like your 510! Congrats on making the conversion!

Cartomizer Info

FYI - Although the one I got at vapor4life is not called a KR808 on that site, it is a KR808, just marketed under their own name. It's the same unit you'll find on vaporkings and other sites.

Welcome Navy, I too have a 510, and love it. I also have a Blu, which is very simple to use, but I dont recommend it. It is very unreliable in the vapor and performance areas. Not knowing your father in law, its hard to say which model will be best for him. Id suggest to let him play around with the 510 and see how it goes. Some pre-filled carts might be the way to go with him. Some other members here may have a few suggestions for other models as well. And, like Brian said, you never have to worry about asking questions here, we LOVE to help each other out. Welcome aboard !

NavyLight welcome to our forum! We are all glad that you found us. Everyone is really nice here and we all try to answer any questions you might have. As Brian stated someone here will answer your question about the 808. I have a 510, 801 and a VP PT. I really like them all. Good luck with your father in law.

Thanks for making me feel welcome and for the advice!

I just looked at a Vapor4Life usb passthrough. Anyone have an opinion if that would be a good way to test out the 808 before buying a whole kit? (ummm... don't assume I know what the hell I'm talking about here though) :-) It looks like there is a reasonable amount of variety of cartomizer flavors. And I assume you can just buy the usb passthrough and some cartomizers and be able to vape.

thank you

You are correct and it sounds like a pretty good idea for a way to test it out.

Welcome to the forum, NavyLight.

I may be wrong as it's been awhile since I ordered my passthrough, but I don't think mine came with an atomizer. Mine is for my 510 though, so that might make a difference. I don't think a person can go wrong with the 510, but every person is different. Hopefully you can find something that works well for your father-in-law. Switching to vaping was very easy for me, but I still get frustrated with the dripping, etc., too.

Good luck with the new adventure into vaping!

He's looking at the KR808D1 which uses cartomizers (cart and atty are one piece). You can refill it a few times before it starts to lose vapor. I got one for my wife. Haven't used it yet, but it looks pretty nice. We'll be testing it out soon.

Well if you guys are interested: After modifying the 510 cartridge with the Mighty Leaf tea bag (leaving the stringy lining in), I have been able to vape for nearly an hour on two occasions today. I didn't really count the drops to fill it, but I would say it is somewhere around 10.

Breakdown for driving (I refilled the tea bag prior to getting on the road): Drove approximately 20 minutes; idle for about an hour; drove approximately 30 minutes home. I used the 510 the whole way without a noticeable drop in vapor. That is acceptable for me. I will let you know if it fades in quality over time. For now, I am pretty happy with the results.

Excellent! I may have to try this also. I've only got about a 45 minute drive so this will be good for me.

Welcome NavyLight! I started with the same unit from V4L that you're talking about. I found it acceptable, and used it more often than I used analogs. My wife still uses it occasionally, but she quit smoking some time ago anyway.

I do have experience with the futzing around issue. Last night as we were watching a movie, I kept dripping and vaping. My wife asked, "Do you have to do that all the time?" Yep; it's what keeps my flavor and vapor maxed out. But she obviously prefers the cartomizer since it doesn't require frequent intervention.

I have refilled cartomizers up to four times successfully. If you carefully pry off the white tip and remove a rubber gasket inside, you can refill easily. I put a dot on each cart with a sharpie each time I refilled it to keep track. The dots stay on just fine.

Good luck with your father-in-law, and congratulations on taking up your new lifestyle.

Thanks. I think I will give the passthrough a shot. 15 bucks isn't much to spend on something like that I think.

Update: I used the teabag mod this morning going to work. It was about 40 minutes total drive time. It did get weak around 30 minutes. I tapped it on the steering wheel a few times and it got a bit more life to it.

Differences: I filled it up last night and was using it continuously this morning.

The 510 cart mods like the tea bag etc sometimes hang up or vapor lock on me and tapping it or pulling off and putting back on helps sometimes to free them up..There are some new carts coming I hear that should be like what we are doing ourselves to the stock ones for better performance.Cant wait to try them out I love my 510 but its alot of work since I am not much into direct dripping all the time...The Kr models dont give as much vapor but they are easier to use and improvements to these are happening right now..Updates are on the way at Vapor4life in early 2010..And if one of them would make a direct fit cartomizer for a 510 it would be great!!!

Yeah, a direct fit cartomizer would be great.

I've seen pretty good performance so far from the tea bag mod. I've noticed that the performance seems to degrade after a few days though. I wonder if the residue builds up and just becomes gooey causing it not to wick anymore. I also wonder if there is anything I could add to it to loosen it up without wasting the juice that is currently in there. It might be worth it as an experiment to take out the bag, clean it thoroughly (if possible), and see it I get the same vapor production I had before. If that works, then finding something to 'ungoo' it might be worth considering.

I made a new tea bag mod yesterday and am still puffing on it today. The vapor production over that amount of time is very impressive. <just took another puff - very nice :) > So it has performed well without a fill up since about 5pm yesterday. It is now about 1pm, and still going strong. That's obviously not constant vaping, but it's just nice to be able to pick one up and not have to goof with it first thing in the morning.
