cany
Yeah the original Bronco was a pretty tough SUV and before SUV meant, 'middle aged woman driving brats to a soccer game on under inflated tires weaving in and out of traffic like it was a Porsche' Hell now a days anything with AWD is called a truck when I was a kid a truck an = open bed/ 1 door on each side that was a truck Edited April 6, 2015 by cany Earthling789
Earthling789
Hell now a days anything with AWD is called a truck when I was a kid a truck an = open bed/ 1 door on each side that was a truck Yep, me too... gotta be able to haul stuff to be considered a truck... two doors and an 8' bed... 6' is acceptable for a short-wheel-base or step-side What gets me is how they classify vehicles these days, mostly because of fuel economy. I think the biggest mis-classification I've seen lately is the Honda Fit... that tiny little box of a vehicle... it's classified as a mini van! Tam
My so-called full-sized Impala is only the size of what we used to call "mid-sized" back in the day. I've had several "real" full-sized cars like the '65 Ford Galaxy 500 and the '69 Buick Electra. Now those were full-sized, not what is sold these days. Earthling789
Full-size back in the day were tanks... capable of seating 10 (on two bench seats)... I use to put a full-size 26" wheel 10-speed racer in the back seat of my '75 Gran Torino Elite (with room to spare for someone to sit if necessary). My last full-size Lincoln Town Car ('02) barely fit 5 adults and a child! I think the interior of my '95 Grand Marquis was bigger, and neither held a candle to mid 70's land yachts I loved so dearly My current Ford Fusion is fairly roomy for a mid-size, but could be bigger for my tastes. But, my '69 F250 has a bench seat large (and comfortable) enough to sleep on (I'm a hair under 6')... and I have slept on it more than once when hunting and I didn't want to set up a tent, lol. Mplough
Okay Tam you are showing your age......(cricket, cricket) My first car was a 1976 Chrysler New Yorker, 4 door, 440 4 barrel. Slow as dirt off the line but would do 120 all day long. The only thing you can buy that long now is a small limo or a pickup. As Earthling said, the seats were big enough to sleep on, COMFORTABLY. Of course my girlfriend and I used them but not to sleep on, lol. I could not imagine trying to have youthful rites passion in a Yaris or Civic.....unless you were a midget little person. BirdDog
Had a Ford Escort SS, that sucker was in the shop every week. I liked my Chevy Impala (2000). Nice engine and tons of room. I think that was the last year for the large body style, a friend of mine wanted it because it was a NASCAR design (?). The only problem was electrical and in the dash Finally gave up and sold it. I love my GEO Tracker. Sorry guys, but that car just keeps going and takes a beating. I have had that care since 1994.
Earthling789
What really gripes my rear is the MPG of newer cars... my F250 w/390-modified gets better MPG than my father's '10 F150 (with 6-cyl) did. My Grand Marquis got 28mpg with a 5L V8, and my 4-cyl Fusion struggles to hit the same. Back in the 80's, I had a Mitsubishi that regularly hit 50mpg and had a top speed of 118... It drives me nuts that cars can't get the mileage they use to, thanks to all the gov't regulations and EPA mandates. Even my '85 Honda Shadow struggles to break 50mpg, when back when it was new, 65mpg was considered CITY, not highway! I've had cars from the 40's through today, and my greatest love is cars from the 60's and 70's
Mplough
Nice try, not googling that! lol Yeah back in High School a buddy handed me a piece of paper that had a stick figure man ontop of a stick figure woman with his backside up in the air. At the bottom it said, "Turn over". On the back the mans backside was flush with his mate. On the bottom it read, "Turn over".. Back then It was called, "The Pollocks Sex Guide". I have no idea why but during the late 70's and early 80's there were a ton of Pollock jokes. Your Flip Over and Repeat Daily reminded me of that. Mplough
My second car or rather truck if you will when I was 17. Had a built 289, converted 3 on the tree to a Hurst floor mounted 3 speed, 2 4 barrel carbs. That was back in 1988, I used to give brand new IROC-z's heart attacks. The only thing she wouldn't pass was a gas station Mine looked exactly like this one except for the rims. I had Keystone Babymoon's. I swear I wish I could find a decent 72 Gran Torino with a 429 Cobra Jet Edited April 6, 2015 by Mplough

Earthling789
Oh, my '69 has a few rust holes, and the bed won't win any prizes, but one thing is universally true.... no matter how bad a truck looks, it's still a truck and commands respect A car with a rusted fender means you're not a good owner... a truck with a rusted fender means you've actually used your truck for it's intended purpose Tug

Mplough
For a '72 Torino with a 429 Cobra... yeah, LOTS of money Well the search has been: Tons of rust, lot's of 351's and an assclown that replaced his 429 with a chevy 350! I have seen 4 in the 10-20K range but I'm holding out for that granny car. Full auto? SBR
