Here's an article I stumbled on while on Facebook this morning. Interesting.

http://miami.cbslocal.com/2014/02/09/experts-increasingly-contemplate-end-of-smoking/

Interesting article! As I observed, people smoking regular cigarettes were lessen. Maybe because of the electronic cigarette and the cost of regular cigarettes are much higher than before. Yet, we cannot please anybody who smokes to stop what they are doing. Because it you might take away a very important thing from them. Thank you for sharing the link!

Good article. Thanks to vaping the wife and I are two less smokers in the world. Unfortunately when analogs are a thing of the past vaping will be the next bone to chew. It's already happening a bite at a time. Now the W.H.O. wants a ban on vaping indoors in public places for starters. I'll see if I can link the post from my local news. It was also posted on FB and alot of responses showed the ignorance and intolerance of the public when it comes to anything resembling smoking. Analogs on a decline is a great thing but also a double edged blade.

Here's the link to the short article my local news station posted.

Loving the end of that article... "use only as a last resort to stop smoking. " Wonder if they have the same thoughts towards drugs that cause suicidal thoughts/tendancies in enough people to have alternatives to it. Doubtful, someone is getting paid lots of money for those, you know, with "regulation".

I read the article, and on the surface it sems reasonable. But, being the cynic that I am, I don't believe much of what some of these people are saying. I'm sure many, many people would like to see cigarettes go off into never-never land, but most are civilians, not govt. beaurocrats who will say one thing to the audience while one hand behind their back open to "donations" from the one they're demonising. Occasionally a disguised truth emerges. Such as - “It’s hard to do a ban on cigarettes because you’re taking something away from people they have and are using. Once you have something, you hold tight,” said Richard Daynard, a Northeastern University law professor who focuses on tobacco issues." I know he's talking about the cigarette, but the same words can be interpreted to refer to the tax revenue from cigarettes. All one has to do is change the context of the statement. See, told you I'm a cynic.

Also, being an exsmoker, I think they're attacking cigarettes from the wrong end. "But if the FDA can ratchet down nicotine in conventional cigarettes to levels below what’s in e-cigarettes, perhaps everyone who clings to smoking will switch to the higher-nicotine new products. That could achieve the end of smoking, at least of combustible, carcinogen-filled cigarettes — or so the thinking goes". I do agree that smoking cigarettes is a nasty smelly habit that annoys many people, but attacking just the nicotine, which has pretty much been shown to be not much more harmful than caffiene, is not going to solve any of the health problems associated with cigarettes. Here's a novel idea - produce cigarettes with only natural tobacco, no additives, no spider/roach legs, floor sweepings, added chemicals, etc. Still probably not a very healthy end product, but better than the crap that's being marketed today.

With that said, the idea of ratcheting down the nic levels to push people to less harmful e-cigs does have some appeal, but then the tax revenue monster shows up once again and makes e-cigs the target.

That's my 2 cents. I could be wrong. BTW, why do we have to give our "2 cents worth" when all anyone asks for is "a penny for your thoughts"?

I don't think you're wrong at all. I hate to be simplistic but at it's core the reason smoking is still a problem today as it was 50 years ago is the revenues it generates are TREMENDOUS - both taxes and commercial. There are a lot of hands in that pie on both sides.

If it means they'll stop showing those horrible Truth commercials on TV, the sooner the better.

The gov't can do this anytime they want to. They have had the evidence for years. But guess what?
