Compenstine
The reason I called it a Toaster Coil is because I was looking at the toaster we have that has ribbon wire coils like it. That is what inspired it to begin with.

Compenstine
When your twisting wire it will break if you over twist it or if it gets a kink in it.

gag8tor
Thanks Tug. It's shorted out a couple of times. I think the positive end of it keeps touching the center post. Gotta tweak it a bit. Edited April 7, 2015 by gag8tor

gag8tor
Sorta frustrating. I'm using 28ga wire and it's really flimsy. I need some more wire so I may pick up some 26 and try that.
Tug
Try some 24,it really holds its shape once you torch it and wrap it
gag8tor
Thanks. I've never torched the wire before. Usually just wrap it tight and pulse fire it and squeeze the coil tight with tweezers. Just gotta experiment I suppose.
Tug
Torching it before wrapping takes the spring out of the wire, makes a big difference
gag8tor
Will a lighter work? Don't have a torch.
Tug
Not really but I've seen people use their stove top to heat them up
Compenstine
Lighter will work, but they leave soot on the wire, they don't get hot enough. If you have one of the butane type of lighters that have a torch like flame, they work ok.
gag8tor
Loose screw. Go figure. Picked up some 26 ga today. Gonna try my hand with that next time.
DragonGunner
Torching it before wrapping takes the spring out of the wire, makes a big difference Hey Tug I used to torch all my coils but I guess I have gotten lazy after torching for a year and just pulse fire them now. Go figure eh? That being said if I use anything under 28ga (which is almost never), then I would torch'em. Compenstine
I torch my wire before I build the coil, then pinch and torch them, and then pulse fire them and pinch them again LOL I'm and over torcher. Tam
jasonculp
With regular round wire I don't torch much anymore. With the tiger wire, I probably should. I can wrap a beautiful coil and first time I pulse it tries to uncoil...lol I have learned to deal with it though. It is worth the effort. I just pulse it, put the screwdriver back through the coil, loosen a screw, pull the wire to tighten it up again, tighten the screw....repeat this a few times until it sets, then pulse and squeeze a few times and we're good to go!
