Bebop Posted October 5, 2013 Posted October 5, 2013 Well, I revisited some old juices recently. I wanted to use up some stock before my next juice order came in. All my juices kept in a kit in a cool dark place. Everything older than about 4 months is toast. Color and flavor very unappealing. Some of my clear or near clear juices had become dark amber to light brown. The flavors were way off. And not just because my tastes have changed. Certainly there is an element of that, but these juices have gone bad no doubt. Apparently the shelf life of juice is shorter than I imagined. What are your exoeriences with deteriorating juice? I generally like to keep my juices fresh, replenishing them every few weeks. And BTW, I have checked on these juices periodically but here's a case where steeping didn't help at all.
mcquinn Posted October 5, 2013 Posted October 5, 2013 I would imagine it just depends on the juice. While I seldom ever have more than a months supply on hand It is always the same. They say to expect a shelf life of one to two years but you never really know how long it was at the vendor except the ones who mix when ordered. I would imagine some of the smaller mixers don't have the means to sanitize their gear like a larger manufacturer would and things could get in there to start a biologic event.
BirdDog Posted October 6, 2013 Posted October 6, 2013 From my experience, I found that liquids with a higher PG (greater than 50) content lasted longer than the ones I had that had a higher VG content. The ones with the higher VG did exactly what you described. I had a couple bottles of higher PG that lasted well over a year. Not sure how the nic held up, but the flavor and color held perfectly.
