Jdog
hey all! so , I just got my mini DiD in the mail today. I watched all the videos that i could find before touching anything. had no problems putting it together, but making the coil is just not working for me. the videos are all for the larger size DiD, so I imagine that this is where I am having problems. Basically, I can't get the resistance high enough. I'm using an ohm meter and a provari to check ohms after each try. I think the cap is touching and creating a short. creates a error E1 on the provari. at most, I have been able to get a 1.7 ohm cart but as soon as i put the cap on it reads as dead. I'm pretty sure I'm doing everything else correctly. hopefully I can either figure this out or someone will help me..
Uma
Sorry I didn't see your post earlier, I was out of town. The problem you're experiencing sounds like something is shorting, probably on the cap. Check list: 1. DID you Jack Frost your wick? 2. DID you trim the tank end of the wick at 45% angle and torch or trim off ALL stray ends? 3. DID you lift the wick a smidgen after inserting it into the bottom of the tank so that it no longer hits the bottom? 4. DID you trim the top of the wick below the nut height after coiling? (and remove all stray ends) The kid needs the computer back for a little while, but I will be back in a little while and post some more videos. Here is the Jack Frost method. (it's a long video, but ONLY because he takes it nice and slow so the newbie can follow every single nuance). Jdog

Uma
Oh my! That's a new one! I'll ask around and see what the problem is. Freaky! In the meantime, here's Scott's helpful tip using a tiny cut of tobacco paper. The paper helps newbies because it lends a hair of air space to assure against coiling too tightly. Plus it helps to protect the wick from scratches while the newbie is pushing the coils around with a toothpick. Make sure to follow every step, if using this protective measure. Uma
I asked around and the wick seems to be the biggest culprit. It is pulled out in such a way as to cause a huge hot spot. He really needs to redo the wick and coil. Watch the videos again.

The wick is set in at an unNatural angle. The cap is banging the wick, because it can not miss the wick at this angle. REview the videos, notice the STRAIGHT wick, the HEIGHT of the wick, the OXIDIZED methods of the wick, and all things wick and coil related. The burning wick, as you have it set up now, is not limited to the DID. This will/would happen on ANY genesis. It's user related, not product related lol. Try try again. You'll get it! Jdog
@uma thank you so much!! you are a superlady I have one HUUUUGGGEEE favor to ask, i think I remember you mentioning you were also getting a mini. is there any way you could take a finished picture of your finished wick before you put the cap on? If you can make this happen I would be forever greatfull! I think I am having troublewith the coiling. I'm pretty sure I did a prettty good job of making a 'jackfrost' wick , it's fully oxidized, pretty evenly rolled (i used a paper clip) and then the problems statr happening.... but Ill make it work. eventually off to watch more videos... Uma
I'll try to take a pic today. My phone camera sucks, so don't hold your breath for a decent close up. In the meantime, though, here's a pic of the MINI DID on my purple eGO-c-TWIST. Jdog
so... after a few hours, a few more wicks and coils. i think i may have gotten it !! I've got it reading at 2.6 on the ohm meter without the cap and 2.5 with and without the cap on the provari. http://imgur.com/a/o9087 does that look correct? also, @uma million thanks! Uma
As soon as we get the DID and MINI DID, we have to take it apart and put the o-rings on it. They come in a little package with, some extra 0-rings. Putting the o-rings on correctly:

I think it's beautiful!!! Congrats!!!! I've shared with some friends and they're going to check it over too, and if anything is looking "off", I'll report back to you. Be sure to direct drip for the first 10 draws or so, to be sure to season that wick nicely and get the wick flowing smooth. The DID is favored for it's amazing wicking abilities. You'll see! Fire er' up!
Uma
First feedback: by evilfrog: "If that's 32 kanthal then he should be well over 3 ohms. If it's 32 then his mesh is probably poorly oxidized and/or is shorting against the bottom" (lift the wick a hair)
Jdog
alright, so I guess all that payed off. after hours of watching videos, making a bunch of wicks and burning through about a foot of wire I've finally got a 2.6 ohm mini DiD !! it was definitely that last batch of Rick's vids that did it for me. that info is so essential !! anyways... so it's working great! I'm really glad I stuck through it and got it to work. the flavor is amazing - this vanilla custard juice never tasted so good (although that could just be the taste of success ) anyways.. just wanted to share. thanks to everyone for the help! I couldn't have done it without you! EDIT: the wick touching the bottom was an initial problem - a cut and a lift fixed it ! then it was the coiling ( i didn't get it even enough) after fixing both i got [what i said up there ^] I'll drip a bit more on the wick (sounds like that will even out the hits) any chance of finding out what kind of wire they send with the atty? Uma
That's great!!!! Congrats!!! The wire in the kit is 32 gauge A-1 Kanthal. You can find a roll of 200' for 11 bucks and under on eBay, Also try the 30 gauge when you find it. It's a bit thicker and easier to wrap. Another FEEDBACK on your pics concerns the wire under the fillscrew. Don't forget to trim/cut it off so it doesn't short anything out. There shouldn't be any "left over" wire, when you're satisfied with your wrap. (except a little at the top for minor adjustments/recoiling, like Rick does). Pretty soon you'll be doing all this in under 5 minutes! Buy a roll of it, an extra genesis, (hopefully a DID), and practice practice practice til it's old hat. The wick should last a few months, and the coil too. There are all kinds of threads and videos out there on the Genesis style attys. Cleaning, dual coils, dbl wicks, u-wicks, ... all the advanced stuff that will keep you busy for a good long while. It's an exciting world!!! And we are one step ahead of the stupid politicians with their ever changing laws. . Congrats!!! Jdog
Jdog
@uma - you are truly the greatest! you've helped me so much! I did notice that after watching the Rick video of him doing the coil, i took that part off. so the coil just goes from the ground to the wick. In the e-gr video that i had seen the guy used the fill screw on the DiD to hold the wire before the ground screw - that's where that came from... but since I have to be able to remove to screw to fill i figured that it would be better to do it the rick way I definitely think I might try the 30 when I buy a roll, I was constantly worried I was going to break the coil .. although i guess i might change my mind after a bit of practice also will probably be getting another genesis atty. probably a bigger one this time the mini is definitely elf-work.. I was really glad to have small hands...but I couldnt be happier with this purchase! one last thing: any good place to find bulk replacement mesh for the wick? Uma
Good deal then, you already removed it. Yeh, I wondered about my wire under the fillscrew too, at first, until I had to remove it to fill it. Lightbulb lol. It's hilarious how stumped we can be over such minor details. I still laugh at myself for feeling overwhelmed with my first eGo kit. lol You have to buy the Food Grade (304) or the Corrosion resistant (316). Either one should work. http://www.mcmaster.com/#wire-mesh-screens/=j3ye07 and even eBay has it. But I would refrain until you know exactly what to get. Shoot, one sheet will last you a year or more! Also, Jim has it on his site, plus you get free mesh when you order a DID from him. (not every genesis comes with wire and mesh, but the DID sure does. Jim's a great vendor!!!) Safest bet for now, is to get extra from Jim though. He also has clear tanks, wire, and spare nuts and posts and stuff. He's on the ball, that guy! I luckily started with the regular sized DID and was even luckier to nail it my first ever try. After hearing your tale, I'll start recommending the regular sized DID's for first timers. What a tale eh! Thanks for the Thanks you've given, & it was my pleasure to help you out. I'm just happy that you've got it going. Jdog
might be a silly question, but who's Jim? upon further inspection I found wire and mesh on e-vape.gr hopefully what I have will last me long enough to find a US supplier... and YES definitely will be recommending the regular size for first timers :P should have thought of that... but the mini one looks so cute! oh well, live and learn! definitely won't be forgetting about my e-torch! hahaha Uma

Uma
LOL, yeh, ya kinda missed it in my previous before previous post. He's great about having the stuff we need in stock, including the attys themselves. A lot of the Rebuildable atty places don't have the stuff you need. If you need a new top cap or anything, you're just SOL. But Jim has it all covered. (no pun intended).
MiriamWTH
A great read and i am happy you got it all sorted out Jdog.
