See, you're well on your way and it's not even arrived yet One thing about wicking a Russian, even using the "fan" method... pre-wet the wick before you complete assembly, fill, prime, and set it aside for at least 5-10 minutes, and prime one more time before you fire it. You'll never have a dry hit on fresh wick if you do that... Did you order the matte finish? I need to order one of the matte ones... the black one is looking rough, and the polished one is a fingerprint magnet Hey, payday is tomorrow, so maybe I'll be ordering one too? Hmmm... it seems every time I get you to spend some money, I realize I need one of "those" too... one of us has to stop listening to me
-
Always happy to help (But, you'll LOVE it, once you get the hang of wicking it...) FYI, I build mine to ~ 1.4 Ohm using 28ga Kanthal on 3mm mandrel... good flow, flavor, and vapor with that combo!
-
VaporDNA has the original V1 for under $90, and KidneyPuncher has the V2 for $60, which is an excellent price for the matte finish (no fingerprints or scratches show). I bought mine from a local shop that was closing one of their locations and had them on close-out... I bought two V2's with updated 510 drip-tips for < $100 Wow, just looked at MtBaker, and they have the V2's for $49.99 (matte) and $52.99 (polished)!

I have Authentic Russians, as well as clones. The authentics are much more consistent, obviously, but not really much difference in the vape between a decent clone an the authentic, honestly. Some of the clones from YiLoong (only clones to have the proper "russian 91%" stamp on the bottom) actually have better juice-flow because they updated the base with wider juice channels and larger air-flow chamber, but they do lack the refinement of the authentic The Russian (authentic) also has adjustable 510 pins... not all clones have that. The Kayfun Lite Plus (KFL+) is really good, too, I just don't care for the airflow adjustment on the bottom. The V1 is a work-horse, and the V2 has a fancy drip-tip which prevents you from slip-streaming for full lung hits, but there are a few refinements over the V1 in juice-channels and better recessed fill-port. Here's my daily line-up... Left-to-right: Authentic Russian 91%, Authentic Russian 91%, YiLoong Clone Russian 91%, AeroTank V2, Infinite Clone Kayfun V4 You can see the Clone Russian is slightly longer because it is based on the Kayfun-style tank and chimney, but has the same base as the Authentic Russians, and vapes exactly the same.
-
I love my Aerotanks, especially the V2's... and you can take lung-hits with them, but you have to slip-steam a little air past the drip-tip (which it is actually designed for that purpose, like the Russian 91% drip tips), or you can use an airflow adjustable drip tip, too. I knew you'd come around Tam! But if you really want a good mouth-to-lung RTA, you gotta try a Russian or KFL+ (I prefer the V1's over the V2's), but the Russian's airflow adjustment is easier to adjust "on the fly". The Lemo is another good one, too. The Kayfun V4 (from Infinite) seems to have the problem of "floating resistance" fixed with heavier springs... at least the Infinite clone I have works better than the first one I bought (Asmodus clone?).

Yes, it is... but don't do it that often, or you can find yourself in the dog house -

Those are Samsung 26F batteries... 2600mAh flat-top 18650's. They are an ICR chemistry, not INR, and they are rated 5.2A discharge, so I would not use them for sub-ohming. I recommend picking up Samsung 25r batteries... they are INR chemistry, 2500mAh and rated at 20A discharge. They will be safe down to 0.2 Ohm builds.

Thanks for the reply. 6mg is probably not the issue causing the cough, since you were a pack-a-day smoker, unless you were smoking ultra-lights and letting most of them burn in the ashtray. Things to try... Start with a fresh coil (I'd recommend the 1.2 Ohm coil) Start with your Wattage down around 8-10Wa Vape... if it is weak or very cool, bump up the Wattage in small increments... 0.1 - 0.5W Vape... repeat Once you start to get a slight burnt taste, back the Wattage down 0.1-0.5W That is what we call the sweet-spot for that juice and coil combo. There is no set-in-stone rule for X-Wattage, as every device and juice is different, as well as your tolerance levels. Another good trick is to start your intake of a little air before you hit the fire-button, and stop firing before you complete your draw. Another trick is to part your lips a little so you slip-stream a little air along with the vape. If you stopped smoking recently (less than 6 months), I would recommend an even higher Nicotine level and staying with a coil 1.2 Ohms or higher... it will help you through the cravings. 18mg and a 1.5 Ohm coil did the trick for me, and I was nearly a 2-pack-a-day smoker for 30+ years. I'm running 6mg now, and I've been vaping for nearly 18-months.... but nothing says you MUST lower nicotine levels... that's your choice to do so Sub-ohming is not for everyone... so don't feel you have to keep up with the neighbors and only using the 0.2 or 0.5 Ohm coils. Personally, I can't stand anything below 0.8 Ohm... too hot/harsh for my tastes. Lastly... drink LOTS of water... vaping drys you out, and a lot of the cough can simply be caused by a dry throat/mouth. Coffee, tea, beer, cola... not the solution... water is the ONLY way to go!

Different temps, really... it depends on the quality of the silicone, but plastic will melt at MUCH lower temps.... a couple-hundred-degrees for some grades. Silicone will be more "rubbery/spongy" feeling, unless it is a high-grade of plastic (silicone infused). Either shouldn't melt or cause issues on the leads (it was likely on the positive lead, right?).
-
I had the same thought, lol... it's not a "fix to the problem", but would certainly prevent it from happening again (if Tam can get it working)?
-
Welcome to VT! Lots of good folks here, willing to lend a hand (and an opinion) Feel free to ask anything...
-
That sleeve is probably silicone, not plastic, so it won't melt. Maybe they use them to prevent arcing between the legs, since they are so close together, and are prone to high receiving higher Amps than a KPT coil?
-
Welcome to VT! Give us some more background, please... Were you a smoker? If so, for how long, and how many packs a day? Have you vaped before? What equipment did you use? What is the PG/VG ratio of your juice? 25W may be the issue... some juices are harsh at that level of power. Try a lower Wattage... say 10W, and bump it up a little if it is not enough... if you get a burnt flavor, you have it too high.

The best way I've found to wick a Kayfun or Russian is to have the cotton slightly snug in the coil (should move freely with a little resistance) - has to have room to swell, and fan out the ends of the cotton and have them just barely touching the deck. You don't need to "pack" the deck, as this will cause dry-hits, but too loose on the deck creates flooding. Fanning the cotton out creates more surface area and better capillary action for wicking.

I'm shocked AR is going this route... not surprised about IN though... These states (actually all of them) are hurting for revenue, and until they get the "holy-grail" of vaping taxed as a "tobacco product" accomplished, so they can restore their Tobacco Settlement slush-fund, they are simply trying to regulate/license/fee the "local" industry to death, so they can make "some" additional revenue from the local shops. It has nothing to do with safety, public health, or children... it has to do with the almighty dollar and the government's ability to spend OUR money like blank checks. I know the owner of my favorite B&M, and he's complained that the local government has imposed fees on his business on-par with the local bars. For what he's paying to operate, he may as well have a liquor license! I've said it a billion times before... if the government (Federal/State/Local) actually cared about our safety, we'd be required to wear fire-suits and helmets in our cars, and all cars would be required to have roll-cages! The Nicotine I buy is derived chemically, not extracted from a tobacco plant (or any plants that contain Nicotine), therefore it is NOT a tobacco product, and any laws the deem Nicotine as a tobacco product are BS laws. Nicotine exists in hundreds of plants, fruits, and vegetables... but Nicotine is evil because it exists in tobacco? Yeah, right! -

Picky is what did it for me... I could never get "exactly" the right flavor from most of the commercial juices. Comp's stuff is really good, but most of the B&M or big-name vendors just didn't have what I wanted. Now, I can get it the way I want it It's not a huge investment... if you know the flavors you want... Buy your Nicotine, VG and PG in bulk, and then experiment with flavorings from different suppliers. I've found there are a couple dozen different chocolates, and they all taste a little different, and mix differently with other flavors. The chocolate I use for my raspberry is not the same chocolate I use for my tangerine, and neither of those are the one I use for my peanutbutter-cups The same goes for fruits... one vendor will be weak, one will be strong, one will be sweet, etc. etc. I recommend you take some advice Comp gave me, and buy your flavorings in small batches (8ml bottles), so you don't have a lot invested in bad flavors. Then, when you find the flavor (or combos) you like, you can buy those flavors in larger bottles. I've been buying mine lately in 120ml sizes, so I can benefit from better prices, and I won't have to worry about any formula changes that may make my favorite flavor combos taste differently. After you buy the flavorings, PG, VG, and Nicotine... a simple set-up with a few syringes (blunt tip needles), and some good glassware (doesn't have to be beakers and flasks, can be Pyrex mixing bowls and measuring cups, but glass is much easier to work with and clean), and you're all set to mix. Heck, I've mixed many flavors right in the bottle they'll be going into, rather than dirty up a beaker... you just have to shake it really really well (and often) to get it mixed -

Even when smoking, I had a pretty good sense of taste, although slightly dulled, compared to today. My sense of smell has always been pretty good, which is probably why my taste-buds seemed to bounce back within a few months after I quit analogs? -

Exactly, Tam! I could never get exactly the flavors (intensity), the flavor combos, or the PG/VG ratios I wanted from any B&M or vendor, which is why I finally moved to DIY. I'm glad I did, really... the start-up cost isn't horrible, but still a hit to the wallet while you're getting set-up and learning, but worth it! -
I just got though mixing up a huge batch of juice (780ml)... 240ml of each of my two ADV's, and 60ml each of chocolate covered raspberry, chocolate tangerine, tutti-fruity, bubblegum, and PB ice-cream! After mixing all of these, I suddenly realized how much all of this would have cost me from my local B&M (even if they offered these flavor combos)... $300, minimum! How did I afford this before? Granted, this is about 4 month's worth of juice, which breaks down to $75/month... but still...

I've not looked too hard lately, because I have five of them... I had 7, but I PIF'd 2 a while back. The ones I bought last fall were either $5.95 or $6.50 each (101Vape, I think?) I bought 3 of their smoked glass ones while they were such a good price. I've seen some sites (not lately) have them advertised on sale or close-outs for as little as $5/each. Even my local B&M has dropped them from $14 to < $10. If I find another good deal, I'll be sure to post it up for everyone.

They're inexpensive and reliable! Some people will drill-out one or two of the air-holes to give them a little better flow, but I like them "stock". They're eGo threaded, but fit any 510 device with an eGo>510 adapter... the iSticks usually come with an adapter, or you can pick them up for cheap.

Tam, I've been hooked on those little KPT3 minis since I started vaping... They were the first "real" tanks I bought after moving up from the starter-kit Ce4's, and like you, I bought them for the "look" (mostly the drip-tip), and was immediately hooked on their performance. And when you can buy 3-4 of them for ~ $20, I don't know why everyone doesn't have at least a couple in their arsenal of tanks. They're perfect for stealth/portability when paired with a small eGo, and perform like the "big-boys" when mounted on a VW device! I carry two of them, along with two eGo 1100's (or a Cloupor mini) and a couple 10ml bottles of juice in my travel case... all of this fits perfectly in my jacket pocket or motorcycle's tank pouch, and give me a day or weekend of vaping on the road!
