Interesting....by mistake today I built a new twisted coil by accident. I was going for my normal 30ga kanthal and 28ga ni200 but accidentally used 28ga kanthal and 30ga ni200. With the same 5 wrap 3mm coil it ohm'd out the same at .15, however when I vape it it now hits temp control set at 460 degrees as opposed to not getting close to temp control when the coil is built the other way. It's still a very consistent and enjoyable vape but temp control now kicks in. Gotta change that up tomorrow.

I tried to block off the airflow holes to one side. I initially used a clipped piece of a q-tip but it leaked through. Then I got the spare rubber grommet used for the top fill and cut it in half and used it to plug the holes. It fit perfectly but within seconds it also leaked. I have no idea now how to plug those holes. Bebop did you have any luck with blocking them up?

Here's a pic of my twisted kanthal/ni200 after a week of use. I brushed it lightly under water and after it was dried. I can notice some bits of gunk but for the most part it still looks pretty good. (.15 ohm coil)

That's a big negative Bebop on the TC or single coil on the Zephyrus. I will try a single coil as soon as I get back to work though.
-
That is very interesting Bebop and Jason. I think I tend to believe that as well. It's just so hard understanding it. I know that I like it and it works so I guess I'll leave all that brainiac stuff to folks who really understand ohms and stuff and just concentrate on perfecting my builds. I'm still running my kanthal/ni200 twisted wire and its performing flawlessly. After about 4-5 tanks I remove the gunked up cotton and use an old toothbrush to clean the coils. Its amazing after a few quick brushes the coil becomes nearly perfect shiny again. I'm finally getting tons of life out of my coils.

Hey all I have a dumb question. Vaping a .15 ohm ni200 coil is equivalent to vaping what ohm kanthal build?
-
I vape dark sweet juices. Add to that I sort of chain vape (3-4 second hits x 3-4 different times before I put my mod down to rest for 10 min or so). I am very hard on my coils and I demand even more from my mod. I don't push the limits of my batteries nor do I go super sub ohm. I try to keep my nickel builds at least .13 or above. That all being said my single strand coils would always get gunked up as well as my cotton get dark. Now my experimenting with twisted kanthal and ni200 has proven a slightly different experience. Perhaps because the coils are more sturdy and consistent I do find that my coils are not getting gunked up as is the case with my single strand ni200 builds. The coils do get darker and perhaps that is because of using both kanthal and ni200. I really don't know. I know many of you may dry burn (at very low temps) your ni200 coils, but I have not tried that yet so maybe that has something to do with everything. Again I don't know. All in all I am extremely pleased of late with temp control and the consistent vape I have been getting. I have not touched kanthal in about a week and a half and don't really miss it.

Yep. It has adjustable airflow all the way down to mouth to lung inhales or open enough for the chuckers.

Great job Bebop. I also reluctantly took out my best build to date and put in a new one. I did it so exact that my flask did not even detect a new coil. I'm so stoked because that .13 coil I had in there lasted quite a long time and performed great. Now I can continue to enjoy. You have no idea how pleased I am right at this moment with temp control. WOOHOOO!!!

Have you tried twisted kanthal and ni200? I suggest try it if you haven't. 28ga kanthal and 30ga ni200.
-
Gotta love it when you finally get a great build. My latest that twisted kanthal/ni200 is still kicking strong after 4-5 days and 2 wick changes. The ohm's are still solid at .13 without any fluctuation like previous builds. I've got it set at 25 watts and 460 degrees and she's not even getting close to temp protection. Flavor and vapor are outstanding. Dreading the day I have to redo this coil.

In my experimenting I actually found that if I make a tight contact coil with the coil master, then take a small mini screwdriver (not phillips) and place it between the coils and gently twist the screwdriver making a tiny gap. I do this to both the top and bottom of the coil until I get nearly perfect spaced coils while the build stays nice and tight (small length wise). If I just make it spaced from the beginning then gaps between the coils tend to be too far apart. Just my funky way of keeping tight spaced coils to fit in some of these tiny decks.
-
Heck yeah. I love me some Zephyrus. I go between the Zephyrus and my STmini and Lemo mostly. I still haven't perfected a ni200 build on the Zephyrus yet so its just kanthal. Both my Lemo and STmini are strictly ni200 builds.

I know right? We need more single coil RTA designs.

Been experimenting today. I don't know if it's just me or if its the rta's I was experimenting on. The other day I put in (what I thought was a solid build) an 8 wrap twisted 28ga kanthal/30ga ni200 8 on a 3mm mini screwdriver in my Lemo. It came it at .13 ohms. Today I put in (again what I thought to be a solid build) a 5 wrap 28ga kanthal/30 ga ni200 on a 3mm mini screwdriver in my Subtank mini and it came in at .13 ohms. I made sure all coils were as perfectly spaced as much as I could. Thankfully both tanks performed wonderfully and I have no issues with either, but I am none the less very confused. I would feel more comfortable if my builds were more consistent. Guess I will have to wait to change these coils out and do the exact same thing and see what happens. I'll make sure to report my findings.

Not doubting you bro. I'm glad you said something. I don't want to be vaping machine oil. With as much as I change coils because I'm experimenting, who knows how much I would be ingesting. Most likely minimal but stil......bleh.
-
I must be a noob as well. I never heard of it before. For me its about a dozen hits on a new coil for it to get broke in properly. I normally taste cotton until its broke in properly.
-
Hahaha. This tank is definitely not a chain vapers (like me) dream. I also find myself topping mine off all the time. But if it becomes too much of an issue I can always up my ohms a bit. Ya they do say airflow should be closed, but I fill it up both ways, closed and open and still no leaking problems. Perhaps it's a wicking issue? I don't know I'm just reaching for straws here because I'm sure you both are experienced builders.
-
I do believe although very easy to build on the Lemo the removable base does come into play. For example if you tighten it a little more after you add juice etc I think it could play a part in slight variations with the ohm or temperature readings. I noticed mine does the same from time to time but then again it could just be the ni200 wire shifting about after being heated and then cooled. I have just put in a new twisted coil in the Lemo and due to the twisted wire being more rigid I was able to use the holes on the deck rather than trapping the leads. Not even close to breaking them off. I am gonna experiment more with different gauges of kanthal and ni200 wires and see what suits me best. I have found out that I rarely reach temperature protection if I am at least .15-.18 ohm and I can really crank it up as opposed to the .11-.14 range where I hit temperature protection more often. Weird how it goes. There's so much variables at play when dealing with temperature control that it drives me crazy. At the end of the day I still think I like temperature controlled devices. It's just a huge learning curve. Good luck with your experiments later on. Let us know how it goes. DG

Can you elaborate on how it changes the settings? That part confused me.

I have the authentic Vapor Flask, bought by my wife for my birthday (hellava b-day gift).
-
For the Vapor Flask you can see the screen when taking a hit. If temp protection goes into effect it will say it on the screen. Plus you can feel the drop as you are taking a drag. It just gets weak like vaping at a very low wattage.
-
No worries at all Jason. I just experimented with a twisted build in my subtank mini. 30 gauge kanthal twisted with 28 gauge ni200. 8 wraps brought it out to .13 ohms (not bad for first attempt). I have it set upon my vapor flask at 450 degrees and she's doing great at 30 watts and is not hitting temp protection with long 3-4 second pulls. Flavor is pretty good, but still not like kanthal alone. The vapor production is plenty with nice dense clouds. It was very easy to build with a wire gauge stiffness about the same as 26 gauge kanthal but a bit more springy. Sorry no pics.
-
How many wraps and what size was your twisted 28 gauge ni200 coil to get a .07 ohm coil?
-
Vaping a new ni200 coil. 9 wraps spaced with a 3mm ID on a Lemo. Set at 480 degrees at 35 watts. Not even close to hitting temp control (reaches about 445 degrees). Great vape. I just love the fact that I can finally take long hits and not worry about dry hits.
