  1. I lol'd. EDIT: I suppose "I lol'd" isn't exactly a kosher post. I shall add some intelligent conversation: I work part time in an office full of other part-timers all around my age (~20-30), so being new-age techy kids, we're all more interested in learning about vaping and possibly trying it, than bashing on it, even those that smoke. However, being a college-run department, there's no way we'd be able to vape inside, and I know we'd get called out in front of the department chair if any of the full timers saw us vaping. On the other hand, I stepped out into the hallway to grab a quick stealth vape, in a small aclove the other day, and I was just about to turn the corner and walk back into the office with a mouthful of vapor and I almost ran right into my boss, who was entering the office. Awkwardly, my natural and immediate reaction was to say "hey", at which time I unintentionally expelled my whole mouthful of vapor. I'm not absolutely sure he actually saw this or not, as he was just rounding the corner to go into the office door, but I'm thinking he did. I couldn't really think of anything to do, so I just played it off by mumbling "vapor" and rubbing my chest like I had just been using some sort of inhaler for a chest cold or something I figured it was believable since I called off work that Monday due to illness. I'm sure he's too old-fashioned to know anything about e-cigs, but who knows what he thought. He did what he usually does in awkward or unpleasing situations and just went back to his desk and IM'd me some stuff to do.
  2. I've never had that happen at a stoplight before, but Sinjhin and I are constantly being asked about it in other public places. He rides the bus too, so I'm sure he gets more attention than most vapers, and probably much more than he cares for. Where we work, we still go outside to the usual smoking hangouts to vape, so we're often queried in these situations. Personally I prefer to vape in peace, so I tend to be as discreet as possible about it when I can, but occasionally I'll offer up some info to someone I think is genuinely interested. However more often than not all we hear is "hey what is that?... oh, can I try it?". I don't have a problem with sharing the experience with my close friends, we share beers all the time for comparison and experimentation purposes, but I'm certainly not going to my PV into the mouth of every mildly interested stranger with a half-hearted subconscious desire to quit smoking. Even if I did, vaping for a few puffs is not sufficient to do the activity justice, and I'd only be hurting the cause by enabling people to form a first and probably final impression of vaping based on a worthless experience. That's what bugs me the most, otherwise I don't have a problem openly vaping.
  3. Here's a wiki page on Everclear, which includes the different proof levels and lists states in which certain levels are legal/illegal: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Everclear_%28alcohol%29#United_States
  4. As far as I've researched, there doesn't seem to be a consensus as to whether or not you should use oil-based flavorings for e-liquids. Some people say it will burn out your atty very quickly. But other people say it won't.
  5. I was just thinking this. You can get pH testing strips at a lot of places. I used to use them for my aquariums, but I'm sure they're cheaper in bulk from a swimmingpool supplier. I've been thinking about starting to mix, and it seems like several people recommend lemon juice or citric acid as a way to help preserve juice AND to supply some additional throat hit. TH is important to me, so I would definitely consider trying it out.
  6. Not to contradict, as I have no experience, but the link SmokinHammer put up to that clove recipe states that oil will not burn out an atty. I've seen several threads with opinions on this that all seem to contradict each other and no one gives any solid reasons to support their argument. Anyone have any more info on this? It would nice to finally figure it out.
  7. Just to confirm, USP PG that you can pick up at a feed store, is usable for mixing eliquids, right? I'd like to pick some up too, but it's always good to be cautious, and there's just something about picking up a gallon of unfamiliar chemical from a place that sells plenty of other [deadly] checmicals that's a bit unnerving.
  8. DOH! I've even done that before, and I forgot about it lol. Although it would still be nice to have it autofill the quote in the fast-reply box.
  9. Just after browsing this thread and the DIY forum in general, sounds to me like a great little general recipe would include something along the lines of the following: - 10 ml VG - 2 drops vodka to thin a bit - 2 drops strong flavoring of your choice - then add 2 drops lemon juice for a bit of a kick @jmhester, I am also interested to know, do you use off the shelf lemon juice, or real lemons. I would have to image real lemons would be much less convenient, and you probably wouldn't be able to store it for very long. I'm guessing the bottled lemon juice at least has some kind of preservative.
  10. Pressing the multiquote button does not do anything outwardly obvious, but it stores the post numbers in memory (or cookies I guess) temporarily. Once you're done multiquoting, then you hit one of the reply buttons, and it will redirect you to a reply page with all the quotes filled into the text field. Multiquoting even works if across multiple pages of a thread. Like if you multiquote someone on page 1, then go to page 2 and multiquote someone else, then hit reply, you will get a reply page with both quotes added. EDIT: However I'm very used to using the regular "quote" button available on most forums (but not here) to quote single posts. Usually this would automatically add the quote to the quick-reply box at the bottom of the page, which is very convenient. On these forums you can still single quote, but you have to first multiquote the one post you want, then hit reply, and then wait for the new page to load :/ Hey Chris, can we have a single quote button pretty please? ;]
  11. Wow, that's even cheaper than the $5 for 177ml (except when you add shipping of course).
  12. As long as we're discussing differences of PG vs VG, I have another facet to add. I just got in some unflavored VG from Arno at awesomevapor.com. Got a bottle of 36nic and a bottle of 0nic for comparison. I figure, if I end up liking VG, I'll just go out an find some in town (hopefully) for a lot cheaper. We have a CVS so I'm crossing my fingers that they have some. I definitely notice that it's a thicker substance than my PG-based liquids, but I also notice that it's more viscus (like more slippery), and thus drips out of the bottle with less force applied to squeezing it, just an interesting note I guess. My real question however, is this: I haven't tried it enough to really decide yet, but upon my first impression vaping VG, it seems to vaporize significantly hotter than my PG liquids; has anyone else noticed this? Because it wasn't the most pleasant vape for this reason. Also, a couple more questions for those of you who have been buying VG locally, and/or know a lot about the substance: 1) Does it really need to be refrigerated? 2) Does it really have an expiration date? and 3) Someone mentioned they found some PG base locally, where did you find it?
  13. That's too rich. I had to laugh. I imagined myself doing this and immediately reaching out of the window and fruitlessly grabbing at the air with this look on my face (that's been there many a time before) that just says "Ahhhhh, WHAT did I just DO?" On the bright side she's loving vaping, so (hopefully) she's done with analogs. I'd certainly pay for a couple extra units if it meant keeping myself (or my wife) from having to endure and possibly relapse into another analog ;]
  14. For example I could even use something pre-made, like this: http://www.vaporkings.com/Joye_510_e_Cigarette_case_black_chrome_p/510-case-blk.htm And simply rearrange the slots to make room for a charger battery and circuit board. Pretty much all of these cases I've seen suffer from the same lack of appreciation for space-efficiency as well. If you removed the gaps in the felt cut-out you could easily fit at least two more spaces for whole units in there. Or better yet you could remove the gaps and just make the case smaller, if you weren't going to make it a charger.
  15. Heh, thanks. I dunno. Obviously the first thing I plan is to machine the case and fittings and use it for myself. Depending on how happy I am with it I might consider a DIY. I doubt I'd go so far as to sell them unless it turns out to be the best thing since in ecigs since the 510. My goal is really to make a lightweight-as-possible, compact-as-possible, space-efficient-as-possible carrying case that allows you to carry more things, preferably with a way to carry at least one or two juice bottles too, I'd have to find a way to account for the different bottles sizes as well. And ideally it would be big enough to hold a decent selection, but still small enough that you could put it in your pocket if you really wanted to. In reality, the 510 PCC is incredibly space-inefficient, with that plastic shell interior. And it doesn't allow you to customize what you're carrying very much. I'd like to find a way to allow for spaces or sleeves that can be used for whatever you want, be it a cart, a cart+atty, a whole e-cig, etc. Really all I would need is a couple sleeves that can hold an entire ecig. And you can swap parts at your leisure. My biggest problem with the 510 PCC is that it only carries 1 battery, the one you're charging. So I end up carrying the PCC AND another complete ecig in my pocket, which is unprotected. I'm always afraid I'm going to sit wrong or something and break the standalone unit. If they had only made it a tiny bit wider with one more space to hold a complete ecig I would be set. I'm looking for a way to keep everything I need (with the possible exception of the juice bottles) in a single protected case. And there's really no reason they needed to make it any deeper than the battery. They stacked the circuit board on top of the battery, which ruins the space-efficiency of the hole-configuration in the top. One idea is to go with something that's more like a classic cigarette case. I think the big problem is the battery. The battery in the 510 PCC is just not shaped to be space-efficient. It would work out much better if it were long and thin, more like an actual ecig battery, but thicker perhaps. Damn, now I'm giving myself too many ideas.
  16. Hey guys. I'm planning on designing my own PCC case based on the 510 PCC. The first step was to take it apart and see what I had to work with. So I made a quick tutorial on the disassembly and guts of the unit while I was at it. Not like there's really anything to it, but if you were ever curious about what's inside, here's your free peek: http://www.mattseng.com/personal/joye510_pcc/
  17. Hrmm. Now I have the sudden urge to listen to some Arlo Guthrie.
  18. Yeh, i just thought father stabbing was a bit graphic, so I changed it. Obviously not quickly enough.
  19. Gweetus, here is a subpoena. I'm suing you because your secondhand vapor kicked my dog... and gave me herpes.
  20. I definitely keep different atty+cart units for different flavors. I even carved letters into the carts so I could easily tell which is which, like F for fruit, M for menthol, etc. Yeah sure, I mix some, like cappuccino and coffee, and one for almost all fruits, but the majority of my flavors I keep separate. On the other hand, I've only had/used 5 or 6 different flavors up to this point, but I've got plenty of new flavors on the way, so I may become a little less anal about it, and/or break out the alcohol for cleaning... and/or succumb to OCD and order another batch of attys. Biggest problem with this is that I generally only take 1 e-cig and my PCC with me when I got out, which limits me to 2 or 3 atty sets. But eh, whatever, how many flavors do you really need with you anyway, especially since you have to carry a bottle with you for ever flavor you want. I'll save my experimentation for home. Actually I find taking only 1 or two flavors (generally 1 for testing, and 1 favorite) with me each day helps with giving each flavor a decent try-out, so I can really wrap my palette around it, as it were. Plus, I can only fit so much stuff in my pockets, and I already had a common set of gear before I started vaping. Maybe Chris should sell a vaping utility belt, with little slots for units, bottles, PT, and a PCC. Or better yet, build a battery right into the belt! Lulz.
  21. Ah cool. If my cheap chinese usb chargers are really using only 400mAh, I should be set.
  22. So, after getting my hands on a bunch of fun e-cigs parts, I realized, my desk is totally cluttered with charger adapters and such. I realized that most every gadget I own can charge directly from USB, so I got a nice Rosewill 7-port powered USB hub from newegg. Now I use only one outlet on my powerstrip and can plug all of the following into the hub: - cell phone - ipod - kindle - multiple e-cig/PCC chargers However the hub is rated at 2A, and I'm wondering if charging all these things at once would overdraw from the unit. How many mAh do you think a charging 510 battery or a 510 PCC draws? I don't suppose my other devices draw all that much power, but I fear that charging 2 or 3 510 batts at the same time might put this unit over its limit. IIRC, it's recommended that you plug a USB PT into something that can handle at least 1300mAh (or something close to that). But I won't be using this hub for a PT, and I'm hoping that a 510 charger wouldn't draw that much. Of course I'm not normally charging everything at once, but I'd like to know if I'd be stressing the unit if I did. Any ideas? Thanks, == Matt EDIT: here's the link to the hub I got BTW: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=17-182-176
  23. I have one of these. Haven't had the chance to use it to charge an e-cig, yet, nor have I used it much at all, but it's a great device, and perfect for this situation. Beware however, this model comes with a wall charger that has only European prongs. And you have to charge it from the wall for at least 8 hours before the first use, so it will be useless unless you get a Euro-to-U.S. adapter. You can of course, pick these up from anywhere, but you may actually be able to get the merchant to send you one with this unit, if you ask.
  24. Yes nicotine is easily absorbed through the skin. That's why nicotine patches work. Recently one of my friends spilled some e-juice on his skin and didn't think to clean it up right away. He said he could tell he had some high blood pressure and high-strung symptoms, and said he hadn't even vaped all day. According to my sources (and wikipedia), the lethal dose of nicotine is about 40-60mg. If I understand correctly, e-juice nicotine strength ratings are in "X-mg per ml". There are approximately 20 drops in 1ml. If you do the math, going with 40mg as the lethal dose, that ends up being around: - 133 drops at 6mg strength - 44 drops at 18mg strength - 33 drops at 24mg strength - 22 drops at 36mg strength - 16 drops at 48mg strength So yes, depending on what strength e-juice you are using this stuff can be very dangerous, and extreme care should be taken when dealing with the juice. Remember those figures are based on THE LETHAL DOSE. You could easily suffer from severe symptoms of nicotine overdosing at lower levels, including high blood pressure, stress, and all the other nasty possibilities. I would go so far as to say that the possibility of e-juice absorption through the skin has to be one of, if not the most dangerous aspects to vaping. I had no idea the stuff was so potent when absorbed like that. You have to remember you're probably not even getting 1 drop per heavy drag when you're actually inhaling it. I'm surprised and a little frightened that I didn't know any of this before starting to vape. I did some research before starting, but this doesn't seem to be widely known, or at least is not widely available information. It won't make me quit, but I have a new respect for the substances I'm dealing with and I think everyone should re-evaluate their preconceptions on e-juice. In fact I think the vaping community in general should take steps to ensure that this information is made much more readily available, especially to newbies. A dedicated thread on the dangers and proper handling of e-juice would be a great addition to the newbie materials, and a video explaining the facts would be ideal. Thoughts Chris and others? Moral of the story is, always keep something around to wipe up your juice with, be it a simple handkerchief, or even better some cleaning wipes of some sort. And always know what you are dealing with. EDIT: The above figures are, of course, assuming full absorption. Obviously you will not always absorb all of the e-juice that gets on you, especially if you wipe it off, hence my last statement. And as was already mentioned, absorption rates will depend on what part of the skin the e-juice comes into contact with. Still this is very pertinent information to all vapers, and ESPECIALLY those with kids and pets.
