Dr. Mike Siegel's New Study On Ecigs

3 cheers for WebMD as well1!!! http://www.webmd.com/smoking-cessation/news/20110208/survey-e-cigarettes-may-help-smokers-quit They covered the facts in many layers!! Excellent read. -
Mike Siegel's new study on e-cigarettes EMBARGOED UNTIL 2:30 p.m. ET (February 8, 2011) Contact: Dr. Michael Siegel (617-638-5167; mbsiegel@bu.edu) Electronic Cigarettes Show Promise as a Smoking Cessation Tool: New Study Finds Electronic Cigarettes More Effective Than NRT for Quitting Smoking A new study being published online ahead of print today in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine reports that electronic cigarettes are a promising tool to help smokers quit, producing six-month abstinence rates that are better than those for traditional nicotine replacement products (NRT). In a six-month follow-up survey of 222 first-time purchasers of Blu electronic cigarettes, researchers from the Boston University School of Public Health found that 31.0% of respondents reported having quit smoking. This compares favorably to an average six-month abstinence rate of between 12% and 18% for NRT products. The authors conclude that electronic cigarettes are a promising method for smoking cessation. The study was led by Dr. Michael Siegel, Professor in the Department of Community Health Sciences at the Boston University School of Public Health. The authors conducted an internet-based survey of a sample of first-time purchasers of Blu electronic cigarettes six months after the initial purchase. The primary findings were the following: · 31.0% of the respondents reported having quit smoking at six-month follow-up. · Of those who had quit smoking, 34.3% had discontinued the use of electronic cigarettes as well. · 66.8% of respondents reported having reduced the number of cigarettes they smoked after using electronic cigarettes. · 66.8% of respondents reported having quit smoking for a period of time after using electronic cigarettes. · Among respondents using electronic cigarettes frequently (more than 20 times per day), the six-month smoking abstinence rate was 70.0%. The study’s main limitation is the low response rate of 4.5%. It is possible that those who responded to the survey were more likely to have quit smoking than those who did not respond. Nevertheless, despite this limitation, the study authors believe that this is the best evidence to date on the effectiveness of electronic cigarettes for smoking cessation. They point out that this is the first survey which relied upon an unbiased sampling frame. Despite the limitation, the authors conclude that electronic cigarettes “hold promise as a smoking-cessation method and that they are worthy of further study using more rigorous research designs.” Dr. Siegel suggested that a major reason for electronic cigarettes’ apparent effectiveness as smoking cessation method is the fact that these devices address both the pharmacologic and behavioral aspects of addiction to smoking: “While it is well-recognized that nicotine plays a role in smoking addiction, little attention has been given to the behavioral aspects of the addiction. It is the fact that these devices simulate the smoking experience which appears to make them effective as a smoking cessation tool.” A number of anti-smoking groups have argued that electronic cigarettes should be removed from the market because they have not been shown to be effective for smoking cessation, and several states – including New York – are considering bans on electronic cigarettes. “This study suggests that electronic cigarettes are helping literally thousands of ex-smokers to remain off cigarettes,” Dr. Siegel stated. “Banning this product would invariably result in thousands of ex-smokers returning to cigarette smoking. Removing electronic cigarettes from the market would substantially harm the public’s health.” Co-authors of the study were Kerry L. Tanwar and Kathleen S. Wood, also of the Boston University School of Public Health. Started Dripping Today. I Think I'm Stopping It Today Too
Uma replied to Sheff's topic in Modders Forum
The LR attys do take more drops (6) to prime, as mentioned. It's the SR that only take 2 or 3 drops. Glad you got it figured it out. We have awesome posters here!!!! -
Little Big Planet 2: Vape Themed Levels

Sounds like fun. What platform are you using? -
I think MsTsBakery also still sells sample packs/sizes. Plus she has the little buddy to carry them in if you want to buy something cool to beat the shipping costs. A lot of the vendors do have Free Shipping over certain dollars spent. I wish they all did. There is also a Master Coupon List somewhere that will help to offset the costs of shipping. Also, many times, if you mention you are a new to them buyer, you'll recieve a discount or a freebie. It's usually listed on their home page somewhere. I usually do what DJ suggested, and buy on different paydays so that it doesn't feel like a lot. Once or twice I've had to pay up a bunch of s&H totals and it sucked, but it was worth it when my orders arrived and I forgot all about the S&H pains.

Wow, sorry to hear about your Dad's scare and ordeal. All the theories by the posters sound feasible. Another thought that might be worth mentioning, so I will, is that some smokers actually recieve similiar reactions when they go cold turkey. (chest pains). The rash could be a sign of allergies. A nice VG mix might be okay for him. It's sad to think he'd have to continue with smokes if he gives up on vaping. Goodprophets.com has a good VG line with decent flavors. (they've pretty much mastered the Thin VG line. It's difficult retaining flavor and vapor when thinned for carto's and JB's, but they did pretty darn good!!). Thoughts and prayers to you and your family. I hope the Dr. see's the limits of his observational questions and digs a little deeper for answers.

Here's a tutorial from HighPing that might help: Be sure to read the entire instructions first before trying. Many tips were added after the initial listing. 1. Blow out any excess juice. 2. Rinse with hot water and blow out thoroughly. (no need to dry over night, or anything. They have a built in dryer ) 3. Connect to battery...preferably something higher voltage than stock. I use my variable voltage power supply that's connected to a PS passthrough and set it to about 5.2V for a 510 (6.5ish for an 801), but if all you have is stock, then that will work too. 4. Push button until you see orange hot...carefully...not super bright (white hot). 5. Let off button and blow down the barrel (from a distance, not with your mouth actually on it), this kind of flash cools it and also gets some of the moist air out to speed the drying process. 6. Repeat (steps 4 and 5) 5-10 times... you will see that gradually (once you've got it dry) the glow will occur much quicker. 7. Once you have it to this point, press and release the button at a rate that just holds the orange glow (kind of a manual 'pulse width modulate'). Keep this glow going for 20-30 seconds, being very careful to maintain the glow at low orange (not bright red/white) or you'll pop it. 8. Once you have done that, repeat steps 2-7 one more time. At this point you will have an atty that performs like (or better than) brand new. I have used this technique with 510, 801, 901, 401, and 4081 attys and it always works for me. I like this method because it is quick and simple. No need for any cleaners or overnight soaking. Takes 2-3 minutes and you're back in business. ** You do have to use some caution, as you can pop an atty pretty easily until you have the method down. I haven't popped one in quite some time though. **Also, no need to remove the wick (that's in there for a reason), as you are baking all the gunk out when you do this. This is the reason for the second rinse in the middle of the process. You basically turn the gunk to ash with the sustained orange glow, then rinse the ash out. If anyone tries this, give some feedback and let me know if you find any ways to perfect this method. Seems to work great, but there are always ways to improve Edit: (some tips on the "rinse, dry and burn" stages of the process) **Tips on the 'rinse' stage (step 2) Step 2 is meant to get as much juice out of the atty as possible. The more juice you can get out with the water rinse, the faster you will get the atty dry in steps 4&5. (The water will evaporate off much quicker than juice.) - Rinse by just running hot water from the tap first. Then once you have it somewhat clean, fill the atty barrel with water then (before all the water runs out), put it in your lips and blow the water through really hard. This will give all the nickel foam that's in the atty a kind of "power wash" and get most of any remaining juice out. **Tips on the 'dry' stage (steps 4 & 5): Steps 4 and 5 are meant to get the atty 'bone dry', before you move on to step 6 and the button pulsing. -The more water you can blow out before connecting to the batt, the better. Blow through the atty really hard from both ends (not at the same time) - You can also blow gently down the barrel (from a distance), while holding the button in step 4 to speed the drying process. This will clear the hot moist air out of the atty and allow for a quicker drying time. The key in these steps is to get the atty dried out. Tips on the 'Burn' stage (step 7) The whole key to not popping the atty is keeping a good visual on the coil, and watching the hottest part while pulsing the button. I have had a few attys that will get bright hot on one end of the coil and nothing on the other end of the coil. The way to make this method the most effective is to maintain that orange glow at the hottest end while pulsing the button. If you keep it up long enough you will see the glow slowly migrate across the coil. When you are all done the entire coil should glow when the button is pressed. Once you are past the drying step, you should not hold the button for more than one second. It should really be much shorter than that. More like a button pulse of 2-3 times a second. taken from highping thread "How I ressurect my attys" at ecf

Good questions!! haha, Nana beat me to it, and with articulation to boot. That's it in a nutshell. Battery life, bottom feeders, VV, Watt control, ... Good luck!

Welcome to VaporTalk, Erika! I completely agree with the previous posters. The eGo is a top notch starters pv plus it's great for the vets as well. You can vape happily away as you browse all the other pv's out there or better yet, all the goodies that keep popping up on the market for the eGo. The eGo can handle what the inventors through at it. It's one tough little pv!!

Way to go there! I bought some of MadVapes tobacco eliquid (50ml bottles) when it was on sale last year.... and I'm still knocked out cold on the floor. I've diluted it with every other brands out there and it's still too much for me. It might have been that particular batch or it might be his typical... give them and try and see. Oh, and VG tobacco did finally smooth it out.

<--- with Nana on this "waiting" issue. especially now that I have a squeeze and please mod lol.

egads, what a bad day! Hopefully someone with experience and knowledge will come in soon to help. I know there's a trick to filling those cartos, but I'll be danged if I can remember it. (I don't use cartos very much, except the mega monster ones now and then) -
What To Do When You Loose The Tip Cover To Your Cart/carto
Uma replied to Sharon's topic in Modders Forum
Sharon, I vape with God's blessing. He's the one who listened to my prayers and gave Hun the creativity and follow through to make the eCig. I could not stop smoking cigs for the life of me (like many others out there!). I begged him to make it easier for me somehow... I fessed up that I was a wuss of the worst kind and ... and I got mad that he let cigs be stronger than me when he promised he'd never make us go through anything too strong for us because he's right there by our side. I got mad, I quit going to church and everything. I asked and asked and asked for over 10 or 20 years to make a gadget that would simulate smoking and/or make real cigs taste so bad that I would stop craving them, or to make me lose my memory enough to the point that I'd forget I ever wanted one. Well, he toyed with my memory, let me tell ya. But then he finally gave in because of all the other smokers out there praying their hearts out to quit smoking and voila! This eCig is a miracle. He not only made it simulate a real cig and make real cigs taste awful, he went one better and gave us fantastic flavors to boot! I KNOW it's from God. -
Did You Drop Analog Cold Turkey Or Both Smoke And Vape?
Uma replied to genieangel's topic in New Vapers Forum
haha, I had one in each hand too the first evening I got it. I'd take a drag off the cigarette and declare "where's the vapor???" Then I noticed the huge flavor differences. The next day began my down to only vaping except for the dreaded 5 or maybe 6 cigs that were difficult to ignore. First thing in the morning, noon break, 4 pm break, after dinner, and bedtime. Then soon it was down to ony 4 I couldn't ignore. After realizing how many analogs I hadn't smoked, it became almost fun to set challenges for myself to overcome the lingering ones. My first challenge was the bedtime one. I really wanted to go to bed non-stinky, so that helped make it easier but it was the most challenging because it meant I'd have to go at least 8 hrs without my nic... So, I vaped some Apple, and dove in bed, and voila! I woke up happy!!! and with Apple flavor dancing on my tastebuds instead of tar. I wanted more of that!! So, that set the stage, and I ended up omitting 2 more from my life. By the end of the first week, I was down to Zero cigs. (except for the occasiona 3 puffs in between atty problems and believe me, 3 puffs were all I could handle they tasted so awful). Everybody's different, but the key elements to overcoming those pesky lingering analogs are: The flavor, the vapor, the TH, the psyche. Once a body is ready to challenge itself with spirit, mind and body, it will be almost fun. Until that time, the body will be thinking it "needs" it's fix via a cig. It's been trained for all those years and it has a war on it's hands. In short: Celebrate and count the ones he didn't smoke. Try many many flavors and mixes and strengths and vendors til he finds *the* wow ones for him. Maybe consider an LR atty to simulate 5v vaping or get a 5v for those times he needs ooomph. Best of luck and in the words of DDaveLarson: "Don't *try* to quit smoking! Just relax and enjoy vaping. You'll be pleasantly surprised one day to discover that you hadn't had an analog in days". He was so right!! That worked for me. (I had to paraphraze, it's been a year and my memory is ... hmmm, what's that word?... -
Wouldn't that be the sweet life. Until then, we can make our own mods though. This lady, SteelJan, can really teach. Take a look at her channel, she even has a tutorial for a 5v VV box with digital read out that we can make for 20 bucks. (Finesse is up to the creator of course). Here's a video of Jan's that teaches us how to build an 18650 mod, complete with schematics. 18650 mod tutorial

Nice review!!! I'm glad you mentioned the Noalox, that's one of the things I would have not thought of. The GLV2 has been on my list of must haves for quite a long time and after seeing this review, I might splurge sooner than expected. Well, as soon as I can decide on one color lol. Love their mini and super mini and reg sized ones too and am looking forward to their GLV3 jb. But I think for a straight up 5v this is the one for me. I think with it's top button it'll be perfect while riding the Grissley or horses. The craftsmanship is outstanding... and it's just a great choice for me. Thanks for confirming and for enlightening as well. hmmm, I +1'd you, but somebody had -1'd you ... either because they hate video reviews in general or are not too fond of beer perhaps. I hope they understand that beer drinkers are the hardest to reassure away from stogies and you are living proof for them that vaping and beer do indeed fit hand in hand.

After the excess is out, you can also try a dry burn technique. (if it's not an LR atty). 1. hold button til it's orange (but not hotter than orange!) 2. let go of button, blow to cool (don't touch it with lips!) 3. repeat 5-10 times 4. it should be orange instantly now when button is pressed. If so, go to step 5. 5. pulsate for 15-30 seconds. (push button, release button, push button, release button) to keep it orange. If you've washed it first, then repeat all of the above at least once. If not, then Happy Vaping! (Tip taken from HighPing) (and I hope I didn't make any errors while relaying tip)
