With your mad modding skills, you should make an atty.

The tip of the cart melting is actually common. If you look at the bottom of the cart, you will notice it is rectangular. It is designed to line up with the bridge of the atty. If you put the cart in the atty and don't line these up, the cart will be touching the bridge and ultimately melt. Some people cut about 1/8 of an inch off the cart tips to avoid this. Yes you can drip directly on the atty. This is called "Direct Dripping". A lot of vapers use this method rather than filling up carts.

I have a 306. I agree it is similar to a LR 510 atty. It does have an exposed atty, so regular 510 drip tips won't work on it. I've had mine for awhile and it's still working, although I don't use it on a daily basis.

I don't know about prone to fail. I've had my VP/PT since November with that switch and its still going strong.

My understanding is the soft top is removable, so its easy to refill the carto. The hard top is not removable so you have to drip through the batt connection end or use the condom method.
