I live in the boonies where it's not a big deal to see rifles in the back windows of pick ups, open carry, CCW is pretty common too. Welcome to Colorado... where men are men and the cows are scared, lol.
All I can suggest is tightening up the coils. You have one that is almost tight and the other has gaps between the wraps. They should both be the same one way or the other not a mix. Pull the wick and heat them up then squeeze the coils with tweezers till the glow from the inside out. Do not fire the coils and squeeze at the same time however unless you are using ceramic tipped tweezers.

Another thing you can do is use a longer screw and sort of a spacer to raise the negative post up. I have yet to do this tho. I have went back to a twisted microcoil with cotton for ease of maint.
